Lutein and Zeaxanthin: AREDS2 Eye Vitamins and Macular Degeneration
Lutein and zeaxanthin are plant pigments stored in the retina. The NEI’s AREDS2 formula, with 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin plus vitamins C and E, zinc and copper, lowered the risk of intermediate macular degeneration turning advanced by about 25 percent. It did not help early AMD, healthy eyes or cataracts. Cooked spinach gives about 20 mg per cup.
